Velocity Gymnastics Academy are this week celebrating, having clinched two Kent titles at a county competition. The squad, which have only been training together since September 2014, travelled to Mote Park in Maidstone to compete at the annual Kent Floor and Vault championships. With stiff competition from other local clubs, some of whom train nearly four times as many hours per week, Velocity held its nerve to perform graceful floor routines and powerful vaults. In the Novice category, Velocity triumphed in the 7 year old division with Elisa Yewman crowned as the county champion, having never competed at this level before. Another Kent title was awarded in the Bronze category of the event; Leah McCarthy, 14, performed controlled routines on both apparatus to be awarded the gold medal, receiving the highest scores on both floor and vault within the entire bronze category of over 30 gymnasts. Head Coach Franki Riches said, “I am incredibly proud of the achievements of all of the Velocity gymnasts this weekend. We have only been running since September 2014, and to accomplish two Kent titles in our first county competition is testament to the girls’ hard work and determination. All of the squad should be delighted with their achievements this weekend, and some valuable lessons were learnt for future competitions.” Novice competitors: Elisa Yewman, Lola Bennett, Georgie Williams, Anya Willsea. Intermediate competitors: Jess Parvin, Isla Bence, Luci Dorling, Rebecca Christian, Izzy Woodrow-Clark. Bronze competitor: Leah McCarthy.
